Legal
Privacy policy
This policy explains what information Ecropolis LLC ("we", "us") collects when you use the JWalk Go mobile app, the web pages at app.jwalkgo.com, and this website, jwalkgo.com (together, "JWalk Go"), and what we do with it.
The short version.
- You can browse tours and play free previews without an account.
- Your location stays on your phone. We use it to tell you when you reach a stop and to show nearby tours; we do not receive or keep your location history.
- If you buy a tour or redeem a code, we keep a small account: an email address, how you sign in, and which tours you own.
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for targeted advertising.
- You can delete your account from inside the app at any time.
1. What we collect
When you browse without an account
Browsing the tour list, reading tour pages and playing free previews need no account. To deliver tours, our servers receive the technical information every app and website sends: your IP address, device and app version, and the time and address of each request. We use it to deliver content, to keep the service secure, and to limit abuse (for example, repeated attempts to guess tour codes).
When you create an account
You need an account to buy a tour, redeem a code, or use your tours on more than one device. You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with your email address.
- Sign in with Apple: Apple gives us an identifier and an email address, which may be a private relay address if you choose to hide yours, and your name if you choose to share it.
- Sign in with Google: Google gives us an identifier, your email address and your name.
- Email: we send a one-time sign-in code or link to the address you give us.
With your account we keep the tours you own, how you got each one (a purchase or a code), and when.
Purchases
Purchases in the app are handled by Apple's App Store or Google Play. They process your payment; we receive a confirmation of what was bought and a transaction reference, never your card details. If we sell anything on the web (such as a founding membership), a payment processor handles the payment in the same way, and we receive the buyer's email address and what was bought.
Tour codes
Hotels, inns, visitor centers and other partners may give you a code that unlocks a tour. When you redeem one, we record the code, the account it was redeemed onto, and when. The partner who issued the code is billed for redemptions; they see how many of their codes were used, not your name or email address.
Location
JWalk Go asks for your location only while the app is in use, never in the background "always" mode. It uses your location on your phone to tell you when you arrive at a stop, to show your position on the tour map, and to sort tours by distance. Your location is not sent to us and we keep no record of where you have been. You can turn location off in your phone's settings and still play tours stop by stop.
How tours are used
To improve tours, the app reports counts that are not tied to you: for example, how often a stop was offered on arrival, played, declined, started by hand or skipped, and where people tend to stop a tour. These reports contain no location tracks, name, email address or account identifier.
The app also saves your progress through each tour so you can pick up where you left off. That is kept on your phone.
Feedback, corrections and stories you send us
If you send a note, a correction, a story or a photo about a stop, we keep what you send and, if you are signed in, which account sent it. We remove location data from photos. If we use your contribution in a tour, you choose whether and how you are credited. See our terms of service for the rights you give us.
When you contact us
If you email us, we keep the message and your address so we can reply.
This website
Our hosting provider processes standard request information (such as IP addresses) to serve the site and protect it from attacks.
jwalkgo.com uses Google Tag Manager, and through it Google Analytics, to understand how the site is used: which pages are read and which links are followed. These tools set analytics cookies and send Google your IP address and browser details. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.
- In most places, analytics load when you arrive, and a bar at the bottom of the page lets you decline. If you decline, we stop, delete the analytics cookies already set, and do not load these tools on later visits.
- If your browser's time zone is in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, nothing loads and nothing is sent to Google unless you accept.
- You can change your choice at any time with the "Cookie settings" link at the foot of every page. Your choice is remembered in your browser, not on our servers.
The web pages at app.jwalkgo.com, where you sign in and redeem a tour code, set one cookie when you sign in. It keeps you signed in on that site for up to 30 days and is used for nothing else.
2. How we use it
- To provide JWalk Go: sign you in, deliver the tours you own on each of your devices, and process codes.
- To send the emails the service needs, such as sign-in codes and replies to you. We will not send marketing email unless you ask for it, and every marketing email will have a way to unsubscribe.
- To bill partners for redeemed codes and pay the owners of tours.
- To understand which tours and stops work well and to improve them.
- To keep JWalk Go secure, prevent fraud and abuse, and meet our legal obligations.
3. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We share it only:
- With service providers who run parts of JWalk Go for us under contract, and only for that purpose: Cloudflare (hosting, storage and databases), Twilio SendGrid (email delivery), Apple and Google (sign-in and app store purchases), and Google (website analytics, as described above).
- With partners and the owners of tours, as counts and totals that do not identify you, so they can be billed or paid.
- When the law requires it, or to protect the safety, rights or property of our users, the public or us.
- In a business transfer, such as a merger or sale, where the new owner keeps this policy's commitments for the information it receives.
4. How long we keep it
We keep account information while your account is open. When you delete your account, we delete your personal information within 30 days, except records we must keep for tax, accounting or legal reasons, which we keep only as long as required. Server request logs are kept for a short period for security, typically no more than 30 days. Usage counts that do not identify you may be kept indefinitely.
5. Deleting your account and your other choices
- Delete your account in the app, from the account screen. You can also email [email protected] from the address on your account and we will do it for you.
- Location: turn it off at any time in your phone's settings.
- Website analytics: decline or accept with the "Cookie settings" link at the foot of this page.
- Access and correction: ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, or to correct it.
Depending on where you live (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas and other US states, and the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom), you may have the right to know, access, correct, delete or port your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain uses. We honor these requests wherever you live. We will not treat you differently for using them. Email us to make a request; we may need to confirm it comes from you. You may use an authorized agent where the law allows it.
Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on performing our contract with you (providing the tours you own), our legitimate interests (security, improving tours, billing partners) and legal obligations as the bases for using your information. You may complain to your local data protection authority.
6. Children
JWalk Go is meant for a general audience, and family tours are meant to be taken with a parent or guardian. Accounts are for people 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, email us and we will delete it.
7. Security
We use encryption in transit, access controls and providers with strong security practices to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee it.
8. Where your information is processed
JWalk Go is operated from the United States, and your information is processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate.
9. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
